Douala-Ndjamena Corridor: World Bank support
The World Bank Director of Operations in Cameroon, Elisabeth Huybens, held a working session with the Cameroon Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe on 5 December 2018. The meeting, which was also attended by transport sector experts focused on cooperation between the two entities in the air and rail transport sectors, infrastructure and railway services modernisation and urban mobility.
Both parties discussed issues related to the development of the Douala - N'Djamena corridor. “It was important to brainstorm on the overall efficiency of the corridor and to have a multimodal vision for transport concerning both aspects of infrastructure and transit facilitation. We know that it is a strategic and essential corridor for trade in the CEMAC sub-region,” said Nicolas Peltier-Thiberge, World Bank Transport Sector Director for the CEMAC sub-region.
In order to bring such a project into being, both parties also took stock of this corridor. “A lot has been done. In particular, the reduction of the turnaround time at the Port of Douala, the railway issue and Road Investments, among others”, Nicolas Peltier-Thiberge added. The World Bank Transport Sector Director for the CEMAC sub-region also revealed that the World Bank would help Cameroon in completing work along this all-important corridor in terms of integration in the Central African sub-region and the emergence of Cameroon as propounded by the Head of State. "There is an urban mobility project that is being prepared in Douala. Other actions are underway,” he concluded.
