Exports : Three hundred thousand tonnes of bananas exported to the European Union

Cameroon exports about 300,000 tonnes of bananas a year to the European Union (EU). Hans-Peter SCHADEK, the new ambassador and head of the EU delegation in Cameroon, said in Yaounde during an audience granted by Cameroon's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), Henri Eyebe Ayissi.

According to the European diplomat, the courtesy visit to MINADER was a golden opportunity to give an overview of the cooperation that exists between the EU and Cameroon in the Ministry's area of competence. This is all the more important as the EU has recently concluded an agreed with the Government of Cameroon to implement a rural sector programme with financial support from the EU.

According to the EU Ambassador, the purpose of the meeting was to examine this issue and to explore other areas of cooperation. It is noteworthy that the banana sub-sector support is an important action that has been going on for some time and, according to Hans-Peter SCHADEK, it has reached a cruising speed.

"It's about maintaining or even improving the competitiveness of Cameroon bananas so that they can enter the European market more easily. This is so as Cameroon banana is highly priced and has the added advantage of being exported without quota limits or customs duty under the provisions of the Economic Partnership Agreements. This is an important factor for European consumers as well as for the agricultural sector in Cameroon,” he concluded.
