Banana-Plantain Festival: Agriculture on the fore
The fourth edition of the International Banana-Plantain Festival held in Yaounde on 19 September, was presided over by Mr. Gabriel Mbairobe, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, in his capacity as personal representative of the President of the Republic. In his address, the minister highlighted the sector’s contribution to food security as well as its capacity to generate wealth and create jobs, in light of the numerous derived products in store.
This festival, organised by the Cameroon National Association of Actors of the Banana-Plantain Sector (FBPC), was placed under the theme “Securing marketing and financing projects for banana-plantain actors”. The festival aims to underscore the role of the banana-plantain sector as an agricultural and economic pillar. It equally seeks to equip actors with the tools and skills needed to improve the production and marketing of this product. The objective is to train a new generation of producers who have the capacity to live solely from their activities.
The State has planned several actions geared towards supporting this sector, namely:
- distribution of quality plant material;
- establishment of a laboratory for the production of plantain seedlings;
- establishment of plantain flour production units;
- improving access to agricultural inputs.
