Creation of a dedicated team takes Mbé yam labeling process a step further

On 19 February 2025, the labeling process for Mbé yams passed a new milestone in the Adamawa region. The state-run daily Cameroon Tribune reports that local producers have validated the legal status of the group representing the geographical indication (GI), and adopted internal regulations to govern the process. This breakthrough was achieved during a meeting where an executive board was elected to steer the project and complete the fourth stage: drawing up and validating the specifications for Mbé yams.

This tuber, known for its floury, sweet texture, differs from other varieties grown in Cameroon. Her unique nature warranted her registration with the African Intellectual Property Organisation (OAPI) as a GI-eligible product. Labeling this product from the Vina region could boost the repute of Mbé yams and add value to this cash crop.

The labeling process was launched in 2023, with an identification mission initiated by the Ministry of Mines, Industries and Technological Development. This first phase laid the foundations for the identification of Mbé yams as a highly distinctive product, worthy of protection by geographical indication.
